09 February, 2012 - Attacks on Border Security Force (BSF) Personnel |
| |
Government of India is constrained at the rise in recent border incidents in which Border Security Force (BSF) jawans are being attacked with alarming regularity, emboldened by the restraint being maintained by BSF to avoid civilian casualties. This restraint has also resulted in an unprecedented spurt in incidents of fence cuttings, illegal crossings, attempts of dacoities and fatal attacks on BSF personnel deployed along the India-Bangladesh border.
On January 03, a group of miscreants from Bangladesh had encircled a BSF party near North Dinajpur and tried to snatch their weapons. On February 3-4, 2012, ten BSF personnel were injured, two of them grievously, in an incident of retaliatory attack by Bangladeshi smugglers whose attempts to illegally cross over into the Indian territory were earlier thwarted by BSF. The injured BSF personnel had been admitted to SSKM Hospital, Kolkata where subsequently one of the BSF jawans, Head Constable Sartaj Singh succumbed to his injuries on February 7, 2012. This attack on BSF personnel was launched by a group of 50 Bangladesh smugglers, out of which three smugglers were arrested and handed over to local police. Some of the photographs of injured BSF personnel, who were attacked in year 2011, are attached.
Despite fatal injuries to its personnel, BSF has been exercising utmost restraint. It is underlined that border guarding forces on both sides should meet to take joint action to avert such incidents in future.
