Press Release Issued by High Commission of India, Dhaka, Bangladesh

PRESS RELEASE

The 33 rd Meeting of the India Bangladesh Joint Committee on sharing of the waters of the Ganga was held at Dhaka on May 3, 2006 . This followed the visit by this Committee to the Joint Observation site at Hardinge Bridge on May 2, 2006 .

2. The Committee observed the flow measurements at Hardinge Bridge and found the observations satisfactory. In fact, the Ganga flow at Hardinge Bridge on May 2 was found to be in excess of 40,000 cusecs. This is well in excess of Bangladesh 's due share (35,000 cusecs) for the current ten-day dry period. This is a welcome development as both India and Bangladesh have hitherto received generally less than their respective shares during the dry period January-April 2006 owing to inadequate rainfall in the upper catchments during the lean season.

3. The water releases to India and Bangladesh at Farakka continue to be in accordance with the provisions of the 1996 Ganga Waters Treaty. The Joint Committee agreed to hold its next meeting in June 2006 at New Delhi on mutually convenient dates for finalisation of its Annual Report for 2006.
